Unhealthy Markets

The expansion of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which has emerged in the wet market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, is progressing inexorably.

Wet markets refer to the fact that many of the domestic or wild animals sold are slaughtered on site. In an extremely congested space, hundreds of people crowd each morning. Cages full of animals, live fish are gutted and filleted on the ground, blood, excreta, viscera and body fluids are mixed with food stands, in a total absence of biosecurity and in very poor hygienic conditions.

These markets have all the ingredients to create the perfect environment for viral or microbial transmission. As long as these unhealthy markets persist, we will talk about the next virus because with globalization, overpopulation, and hyperconnectivity, the world has become small. People, bacteria and viruses travel at a speed unknown until now by humanity. No one is safe within its borders anymore.
