Unhealthy Markets
The expansion of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which has emerged in the wet market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, is progressing inexorably.
The term wet applied to markets refers to the fact that most of the domestic or wild animals sold there are slaughtered on site. It is an extremely congested space where hundreds of people crowd each morning. Cages full of animals and live fish are gutted and filleted on the ground. Blood, excreta, viscera and body fluids are mixed with food stands, in a total absence of biosecurity and in very poor hygienic conditions.
These markets have all the ingredients to create the perfect environment for viral or microbial transmission. As long as these unhealthy markets persist, we will continue to debate about the next viral pandemic because the world is a smaller place due to globalization, overpopulation and hyper connectivity. People, bacteria and viruses travel at a speed unknown until now by humanity. No one is safe within its borders anymore.
